Traditional Tea Ceremonies Around the World

The Art of Japanese Chado

The Japanese tea ceremony, known as "Chado" or "The Way of Tea," is a ritualistic practice deeply rooted in Zen Buddhist philosophy dating back to the 9th century. This elaborate ceremony takes place in a traditional tatami room where every movement and gesture is precisely choreographed and carries symbolic meaning. The host carefully prepares matcha, a powdered green tea, using specific utensils including the chawan (tea bowl), chasen (bamboo whisk), and chashaku (bamboo scoop). The practice embodies four core principles  harmony (wa), respect (kei), purity (sei), and tranquility (jaku). More than just serving tea, Chado represents a mindful escape from the everyday world, creating a space where participants can appreciate the beauty in simplicity and the present moment.
